If you’ve scheduled a maternity photo shoot in Mill Creek—first of all, congratulations! This is just such a wonderful time, and I’m so glad you’re deciding to capture it. Perhaps the most frequently asked question I receive from expecting moms is: “What should I wear?
The reality is, you don’t require an entire closet of choices or anything overly extravagant. The best maternity portraits occur when you feel like yourself—comfortable, confident, and radiant in your own skin.
At Aayah’s Photography, I offer natural, classic maternity photography across Seattle, Mill Creek, Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland, and surrounding areas. Be we meeting at the Mill Creek Town Center, roaming Heron Park, or walking along wooded trails nearby, below are a few easy wardrobe tips to make you look your best in front of the camera.
-
Opt for Comfort First (Yes, You Can Still Look Great!)
Let’s begin with what’s most important: comfort. Your maternity session needs to be enjoyable, laid-back, and be you. Gowns that hug your bump softly—such as flowing maxi dresses or stretchy fitted gowns—usually photograph beautifully.
If you’re fond of the style of something flowy, great too! Skirts and dresses that go long and billow in the breeze give a light, romantic flair—particularly at outdoor locations about Mill Creek where we’ll have trees, fields, or open sky.
-
Hold On to Neutrals or Earthy Tones for That Enduring Style
I always suggest soft, natural colors for maternity photos. Consider whites, creams, blush, olive, rust, or soft blues. These colors work well with your environment—particularly in the greenery of Mill Creek parks—and they keep the attention on you and your baby bump.
Steer clear of neon colors or busy patterns—they have a tendency to take away from the serene, emotional mood we want to achieve in your portraits.
-
Coordinate Your Family (Without Overmatching)
If your partner or kids will be joining the session, aim for outfits that coordinate but don’t match perfectly. For example, if you’re wearing a soft blush dress, your partner might go for light beige or muted gray. It’s more about creating a cohesive color palette than dressing everyone exactly the same.
And don’t fret—I’ll get it all sorted out with you when I book your session so your entire team will be camera-ready stress-free.
-
Add Texture or Layers (Optional, but Stunning)
A light cardigan, a shawl of lace, or a soft knit can add depth to your photos without distraction. A few little additions can make an immense difference—and particularly if we are shooting while the weather’s a bit nippy in Mill Creek.
I also provide styling assistance if you don’t know where to begin. I’ve taken so many gorgeous mamas and I can recommend outfit ideas that suit your location and season to a T.
-
Shoes? Optional. Confidence? Required.
Depending on where we are (grassy park, sandy path, or a scenic field), we might even shoot part of the shoot barefoot. It’s one of my personal favorites for introducing a relaxed, grounded vibe into your photos—and especially in the gorgeous, natural areas around Mill Creek.
Let’s Make Your Maternity Photos Unforgettable
Your maternity photographs are not just photos—they’re a celebration of love, new life, and the amazing power of motherhood. Whether we’re freezing golden hour on an empty field in Mill Creek or walking along near the trails with your husband, my mission is to make you feel beautiful, confident, and grounded in every photograph.
