If you are expecting and planning maternity photos, it helps to know exactly what the day will look like. Here is what to expect at a Seattle maternity session with me, from booking to your final gallery. You can see finished sessions in my Seattle maternity photography portfolio.
When to book your maternity session
The best time for maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks. Your bump is clearly showing, and most moms still feel comfortable walking and changing outfits. I recommend reaching out early in your second trimester, especially for spring and cherry blossom dates, which fill up quickly.
Booking and pricing
A $250 non-refundable booking fee reserves your date. Nothing else is due until your gallery is ready. After your session you choose the images you love, with packages starting at $500 for 20 edited, high-resolution digital images. You can add more images, albums or prints from there. Full details are on my services and pricing page.
Choosing a location
Most maternity sessions take place outdoors. Once you book, I send you a list of favorite spots and hidden gems around Seattle, Mill Creek, Bothell, Bellevue and Kirkland, and we choose one based on the season, the light and the feel you want. For ideas, read my guide to the best maternity photo locations in Seattle. I travel up to 20 miles from Mill Creek at no charge.
What to wear
You do not need to shop for your session. You get access to my client closet of maternity dresses chosen to photograph beautifully, with up to 2 outfit changes. I help you pick colors that suit your location, and if your partner and children are joining, I will help coordinate their outfits too. My post on maternity photoshoot hairstyles has easy hair ideas.
On the day of your session
Sessions last about one hour. We usually start with a few relaxed portraits so you can settle in, then move on to the guided poses most moms love: hands on the bump, flowing dress shots, and quiet moments with your partner. I give you clear, gentle direction the whole time, so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands. We take breaks whenever you need them. Partners and children are always welcome.
A few tips for a smooth session:
- Bring water and a small snack.
- Wear comfortable shoes for walking to the spot, and change into your session shoes there.
- Bring any meaningful items you want included, such as an ultrasound photo or baby shoes.
Getting your photos
Your edited images are delivered in a private online gallery within two weeks, and often sooner. You browse at your own pace and choose the photos you want to keep, print or put in an album.
Planning newborn photos too?
Many moms book their newborn session at the same time, and booking both together saves on the overall package. If you are still comparing options, read how to choose the best newborn photographer near you.
