Planning a family photo session is exciting—but one of the biggest questions many families ask is: “When’s the best time of year to take pictures?”

As a family photographer serving Issaquah, Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, and surrounding areas, I’ve photographed families in just about every season—and the truth is, each one brings something unique to your photos.

Now, that being said, some seasons may be more suitable based on your style, calendar, and the type of memories you wish to create. So let’s cover the advantages and disadvantages of each season and determine the ideal time for your family.

Fall (September – Early November): The Most Popular Season for a Reason

Fall is hands-down the most requested time of year for family sessions in Issaquah — and it’s hard not to see why.

The Pacific Northwest fall foliage is some of the most beautiful, especially in places like Lake Sammamish State Park or Squak Mountain. Lush leaves, cozy sweaters, and soft light are the perfect blend of warmth and nostalgia.

Pros

  • Gorgeous natural colors
  • Nice weather (mostly!)
  • Perfect for holiday cards

Things to remember: Fall dates fill up quickly, so it’s better to book your session in advance—particularly for weekend dates.

Spring (April – May): Fresh, Floral & Full of Life

Color lovers and flower fans, rejoice. If you adore color, blooms, and that new-winter-energy vibe, spring could be your time. In Issaquah, the cherry blossoms, bold greens, and airy wildflowers make family photos light and carefree.

Pros:

  • Soft, flattering light
  • Blossoms and flowers
  • Bright, optimistic atmosphere

Keep in mind: Spring weather is a bit unpredictable—sunshine and surprise showers come to mind. But with adaptable timing (and a little faith!), it’s a beautiful season to work with.

Summer (June – August): Warm Light & Long Days

Issaquah summer provides warm sunshine, long evenings, and unlimited greenery—perfect for outdoor family photo shoots. If your children prefer evening shoots or later nights, summer is ideal for those golden hour shoots that begin at 7–8 p.m.

Advantages:

  • Glowing, bright light
  • Scheduling flexibility (school’s out!)
  • Perfect for beachy or mountain shots

Things to keep in mind: Some locations can get busy during weekends, so weekday sessions tend to be quieter. Also, midday light can be harsh, so we’ll stick to early mornings or evenings for the best results.

Winter (Late November – February): Moody, Cozy & Unexpected

Winter might not be the first season that comes to mind for family photos in Issaquah—but hear me out. There’s something really special about winter shoots. Whether it’s a forested backdrop with soft fog, a cozy in-home lifestyle session, or a snowy mountain trail, winter creates photos that feel intimate and unique.

Pros:

  • Moody, artistic tones
  • Fewer crowds at locations
  • Perfect for in-home or holiday-themed sessions

Things to remember: Outdoor shoots might have to be accommodating based on the weather. But with warm clothing and the proper backdrop, winter photography can be enchanting.

So, What’s the Best Time for Your Family?

The best time ultimately boils down to your family’s personality and what sort of story you want your photos to convey.

  • Want rich colors and cozy sweaters? Opt for fall.
  • Dreaming about flowers and sunshine? Spring time is yours.
  • Do sunny, warm background appeal to you? Summer it is.
  • Yearning for the outdoors or getting adventurous? Have winter in mind.
